Respite is the provision of a short episode of care. Respite may be needed at a time of rapid change or crisis, to allow reassessment of need. However respite can also be used to give carers and loved ones a routine break or even the opportunity for a holiday.
Why might I need respite?
Respite may be needed when your care needs have escalated and having an impact on family.
Who provides this type of care / support?
Respite can be provided on a small scale at home through a ' sitting service' and more complex care needs can be met by one of the local care providers such as the Cheshire Home or any of the residential or nursing homes. Emergency respite is always available.
How do you get this type of care / support?
This is generally arranged by the MS nurse or social worker. You would need a respite certificate which helps with securing funding.
What is rehabilitation
Rehabilitation is very different to respite, as it focuses on intensive intervention usually to maintain or improve/optimise your physical function.
Why might I need rehabilitation?
Rehabilitation may be needed at specific points to maintain function.
Who provides this type of care / support?
Rehabilitation is generally done as an in patient on Le Marchant rehab ward and followed by further out patient appointments for a determined period of time.
How do you get this type of care / support?
This is generally recommended by the professionals that are involved in your care/therapy.
