There are a number of professionals you may meet through the duration of your MS. You may not need them all, but the professionals include doctors, specialists, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dieticians, speech and language therapists, and social workers.
What do health & social care do?
Each of these professionals is an expert in a particular area of treatment or care. Their role will depend on your requirement and needs at the time of referral; for example you may require a physiotherapy assessment if there has been an injury or you have developed weak muscles: if there has been a change in your personal circumstances, you may need a social worker.
Each professional will be able to advise and guide you on the course of action needed.
When might you receive support from health and social services?
You can be referred to any of the key professionals at any timeand referrals can be activated by the MS nurse, or your GP.
How to contact health and social services
Your MS nurse will be the main link to these services and will be able to put you in contact with the right professional. As you meet different professionals, you will build up a contact sheet and this will help you to know who to contact in the future.
GP surgeries are often good places for information too.
