Complementary & alternative medicines

Generally health practitioners in Guernsey are happy for you try any complementary or alternative medicine but recommend that you seek advice on these treatments or interventions before undertaking them.

Complementary or alternative medications (CAMS) are classed as treatments that are non conventional but can be beneficial in MS. There are lots of types available. Here are a few suggestions but this is not by any means a complete list:

  • Acupuncture
  • Homeopathy
  • Reflexology
  • Yoga/Tai chi
  • Massage
  • Aromatherapy
  • Mindfulness
  • Meditation
  • Chinese medicine

This is only a mere selection of what is available.

Cannabis a changing and evolving story.  See the latest details on Guernsey's position on Cannabis. p8 &9.

What to do next / how to progress with CAM

Before starting any of these therapies, do some research about what is available locally, seek out a practitioner who specialises in your chosen therapy and arrange to have some advice/assessment. May be you want to take recommendations from family, friends or other health professionals who may have experience of these therapies. Different therapies suit different people so you may need to try a range of therapies before finding one that's works for you. Keep a diary of symptoms and monitor effect of the treatments noting how you feel before and after treatments.

Over the years we have established links with a number of complementary/alternative medicine providers and your MS nurse would be able to advise on these.
