There are various different sources of equipment in Guernsey. Your health professional or the MS Support volunteer can give you some guidance depending upon what the equipment need is.
Knowing whether to buy or hire
As with anything, if it is a short term requirement then hiring is probably the best option unless you know that there is the potential to sell it on/recycle it afterwards.
If you are likely to need the equipment for longer then we would suggest that you 'try before you buy' if at all possible. This obviously cannot happen if the equipment has to be bespoke for the individual such as some wheelchairs but it is always worth asking the Supplier. If you don't ask, you don't get!
How the grant works with equipment
If you are in need of any equipment which is recommended by a health professional and the States of Guernsey will not fund it, then please do apply for a grant (see Financial support and grants). Please also note that unless the equipment has been recommended by a health professional, we cannot consider making a grant. We do have general guidelines and limits in place, but we will try and work with you and help you to maintain your independence for as long as possible. However safety must also be considered, both for the person with MS and their carers.
